How to actually use this keyword tool
A keyword list without a strategy is just a Word doc full of words. Here's how to turn this database into a real plan for your painting website. Four filters, four moves.
- 01
Start with "easy" difficulty
Drag the difficulty slider down to 10. You'll see roughly 242 keywords most painting companies can rank for inside of three to six months. These are your quick wins. Build pages for these first.
- 02
Filter by category
Trying to figure out where to start? Pick a single category: Interior, Exterior, Cabinets, Commercial, Specialty, and only chase those keywords. One service, one focused service page, ten supporting keywords. That is the play.
- 03
Sort by CPC, not volume
The volume column tells you how many people search for a term. The CPC column tells you what advertisers pay for each click. Sort by CPC descending and you'll see which keywords other painters are paying the most for on Google Ads. Nobody pays $6 a click for a search that never turns into a job, so high CPC is a good sign the lead is valuable.
- 04
Map keywords to pages on your site
Each keyword belongs on a specific page. Exterior keywords go on a dedicated exterior page. Cabinet keywords on the cabinet refinishing page. Deck staining and commercial work on their own pages. The biggest mistake painting companies make is trying to rank one homepage for fifty keywords. Build ten focused pages instead.
Why this list is different from every other painting keyword list
Most "painting keyword" lists you'll find online are static blog posts that were probably built by an agency intern in 2020. They have no search volume. No difficulty scores. No way to filter or sort. They lump high-converting "exterior painters near me" searches in with "how to paint a room" DIY traffic and give you no way to tell the difference.
This list comes from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer (US, October 2026). Every keyword has real monthly volume, a difficulty score, and cost per click. We only kept keywords with at least 20 searches a month and a difficulty rating, and we stripped out the noise: fine-art painters, paint-by-numbers kits, car painting, and national painting brands' names.
What's left is 295 keywords actual painting companies can use to figure out what to rank for, what to write about, and where to spend their marketing money. The DIY rows ("how to paint a room") stay in on purpose, labeled Informational, so you can see the difference and skip them. No fluff. No upsell.
